The 1-Sided Shave/Kesh responds, says "I'm not the first"

Not too long ago, I made a post about what I consider to be the phenom that is the "1-sided shave": In the post, I low key ranted about my frustration with designer/DJ Kesh's protest sans Diddy and Cassie on Twitter, saying that Cassie didn't start the movement, but many females before Cassie [including herself, see picture above] did. Here are a few excerpts from her blog regarding the "issue":

"1. I just wrote a whole post about this 'ethnic girl shaved head' trendkill & read it over and thought WHAT A FUCKIN WASTE OF MY TIME. There were pictures & evrything! So i deleted it and decided i'll just make a few points for ALL the people kickin up a fuss about who started what.

3. Kelis did it 3 years ago ..... forgive me if i wasn't paying attention but i was too busy writing out t-shirt buyers names on envelopes on my shitty rental bedroom floor and not listening to RnB music to notice.
4. I had no idea who JDavey was until after i shaved some of my hair. I don't listen to trendy hipster music or read music blogs to know who they were. After people said i copied her i was like WHO? googled Jdavey and was like oh... that's a mohawk. Different thing.
5. I'm not even going to talk about cassie or rihanna because theyre living a different life to me with teams of image consultants and stylists who comb through fashion blogs, magazines and trend reports and apply all the best things to their 'look'.

So let me just say again. I DID NOT START ANYTHING."

...Ok, hon'. You said you refuse to discuss Cassie or Rihanna, yet oh, do my eyes deceive me? You just blogged about them. Get outta here... I have been aware of Kesh's fashion sense for quite some time now, however, this whole backsliding-talk that she's been dishing out regarding who started what--or didn't start it for that matter, is a tad annoying.

If you look around, online, magazines, etc. you will see [if you haven't already noticed] that more an more women, particularly women of color are shaving either one side, or both sides of their head. Most recently, R&B singer Keyshia Cole donned her own version with red stars styled in her 'do. Four months later, Cassie is still rocking her one-sided shave; and Rihanna reportedly shaved the sides of her head for a photo shoot with Italian Vogue.

Amber Rose: This is my life, this is how my life’s been since I was a kid. I’ve always been popular, my name has always been in somebody’s mouth in high school. I don’t lose no sleep over this shit. Some of the stuff, when it’s extremely far-fetched and stupid, I just laugh. I don’t lose a minute of sleep over this.

Complex: Has your recent fame opened more doors for you?

Amber Rose: Obviously, Kanye is a super-duper megastar so he definitely gave me the fast track to the top, and I love him and appreciate him so much for that.

Complex: What’s one thing about ’Ye that really blew you away about him?

Amber Rose: Well, the fact that there can be a noise in the background, or like a windshield wiper and he will start beat-boxing or banging on the dashboard and start doing some type of beat and it sounds so fresh. I remember when he first did something like that and he just closed his eyes, and gets in the mode. I was like, “Wow.” You have to be a genius to that. He’s amazing.

I would like to start off by saying, "I love your music--especially, your latest effort, So Far Gone"... I noticed that you have been having injury, after injury--the first one being from you playing a game of basketball, tearing your ACL and still performed at the BET Awards. Then, the other day you performed with Lil' Wayne, skipped across the stage and fell. This fall caused even more damage, and now you have to get surgery. I go online today and read reports and see video of you performing--again--against doctor's orders. In life, sometimes God will speak to us through the circumstances, and He sends us messages... I am saying this in hopes that you take a hint and see the pattern that I'm seeing here. The bottom line is, you need to press "pause" for a moment. I know things are moving at vast rate for you, but you need to take a break. Keri Hilson: It’s doing very well. Especially given this industry—even though the business is hurting, the album is still achieving its projections. I’m proud of the album, but you can never expect how the world will receive you or your music.
Complex: So far, your biggest hits have been performed by other artists—Britney Spears, Omarion. Does that fact bother you at all?
Keri Hilson: No, it’s money in the bank. That’s my means of living. There’s two sides of me, and neither takes preference. One is just a dream that I fought long and hard for. Songwriting was my Plan B. My whole life, I’ve fought to just do this. I didn’t know that I’d be able to take off as far, or as fast, as I did, but I knew I had a talent and that I should pursue it, because there’s money in it. When I wasn’t able to perform, and lost the record deal, I took the path of Plan B, and now I love them equally. I can’t have one without the other. Ok, so as many of you are aware, R&B singer/model Cassie shaved half of her head and caused a stir online and in the industry. Now, TV Personality (also NBA star Carmelo Anthony's fiance) LaLa Vazquez has done the same. She even gave a shout out to Cassie and credited her for starting "The Movement" for the bold haircut. Well, a few weeks ago, jewelry designer (Keri Hilson, Electrik Red) Melody Eshani posted a picture of herself circa 2005 rocking the same hairstyle, and pulled a backslide by saying "A pic of me and my new cut….in 2005 ….no dis to Cassie, it looks good on her. Im just sayin… dont be two thousand and late…lol". *straight face* Did I miss something here? Don't say you're not dissing someone when you took the time out of your day to...dis them, and then give a compliment; that doesn't make it any better.

Now, Internet "star" and British based fashion designer, Kesh has also got her retro undies in a bunch about who "started" the "look". On her Twitter, she rants about how she was "taking credit for a hairstyle that she and other girls have had for ages before she [Cassie] claimed it". Someone in a land far far away, in Africa, Europe or somewhere else, hundreds of years before we were even thought of, had the haircut too. I think everyone needs to get a grip and stop with all this "I started it", you need to give me credit talk. Even Diddy got in on it and Tweeted to Kesh, "Ok, you started it. Lol" Gotta love Diddy. Oh, and props to Cassie for holding her own and not letting these jealous people try and make her feel like less of an individual because of their own insecurities and ego trips. Cassie, if you read this, you have my vote!

R.I.P Isaac Hayes

I was trying not to post two articles back-to-back of the deceased, but in honor of Soul/Funk legend Isaac Hayes, it's only right. As many of you already heard, Isaac Hayes passed yesterday in his home. A relative found him unconscious next to his treadmill on his bedroom. The Golden Globe winner suffered from a stroke in 2006. Ironically, Hayes and Bernie Mac who passed on Saturday just wrapped a movie together with Samuel L. Jackson. Isaac Hayes is survived by his wife, Adjowa Hayes and twelve children.

When I heard that comedian and the King's of Comedy star Bernie Mac had pneumonia, I was hoping that he would have a speedy recovery. Unfortunately, the talented actor and comedian passed away earlier this morning. His family has asked for privacy at this time. Rest in peace, Mr. Bernie Mac... you will be missed.

Funny thing is, when I went into the bookstore, I was going to get this other magazine with M.I.A's long lost sister, Santogold. Even Senator Barack Obama supports this magazine! John McCain said during a rally in Lima that Obama implied that Obama has a vision other than peace because "His policy of unconditional withdrawal, regardless of conditions on the ground, could result in renewed violence". Mc Cain also made it clear that he is opposed to Obama's election as president. Mc Cain continued, arguing "We're finally winning in Iraq, and he [Obama] wants to forfeit". The bitter senator also "vowed that he'd rather lose a campaign than lose a war." The election is soon approaching...I'm sure Mc Cain will eat his words.

The Victoria's Secret annual fashion show aired last night at 10PM. This years show was yabsolutely amazing, and in my opinion the best in the history of Victoria's Secret fashion shows. With musical guests Will.i.am, the Spice Girls, and Seal on the microphone, the music was like a cherry on top of the cake [the cake being the amazing models, of course]. Selita Ebanks, Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Jessica White along with the other Victoria's Secret Angels put on a dazzling show--literally. The models wore extravagant lingere adorned with Swarvoski crystals and jewels. The yellow piece worn my supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio is my favorite of the night. If you missed the show, I hope you have a good excuse and you TiVo'ed it.

Kanye West put on one heck of a show at his "Glow in the Dark" tour in Manchester, England Sunday. Hip Hop mogul and pink-hoodie-wearin' Jay-Z made a surprise appearance at the sold out show. "The crowd at the Manchester Evening News arena went nuts as Jigga appeared with West halfway through the show for a performance of "Encore." (See video below.) West produced the hit single for Jay-Z's 2003 CD, "The Black Album." West was due to wrap his "Glow in the Dark" tour last night in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, GB. The trek began late last month shortly after the death of his mother, Donda West. "

Ne-Yo Catches the Acting Bug

Looks like popular R&B crooner Ne-Yo has caught the acting bug. The singer/songwriter has "been cast as Keshon Moore in the film version of the 4Chosen documentary, the true story of four basketball players who were shot thirteen times by New Jersey policeman in 1998 while traveling from New York to North Carolina for a basketball showcase." The film will star some of Hollywood's most top-notch actors, such as Laurence Fishburne, Billy Zane and Cybill Shepherd. The film is slated for a 2008 release. Next year, Ne-Yo will partner up with Zane in the flick "Mama I Want to Sing!". The the coming-of-age movie also stars Patti LaBelle, Lynn Whitfield and Ciara. I don't know about you but I'm curious to see how he holds up against Laurence Fishburne!

Pimp C Dies: New Developments

As many of you may have already heard, rapper Pimp C of the hip hop group UGK was found dead in his hotel room this morning on Sunset Blvd. These are the latest developments on the 33 year-old's sudden and surprising death.

"Capt. Ed Winter of the L.A. County Coroner's office tells TMZ that it appears as though rapper Pimp C died of natural causes in a Hollywood hotel room today.

We're told no drug paraphernalia or other drugs were found in the room. The rapper, we've learned, was found fully clothed on top of the bed. He did not seem to have fallen or injured himself and he was positioned on his side.

Winter said it did not appear that there was anyone else in the room at the time of his death. An autopsy will be performed and toxicology test results will be available in six to eight weeks.

Pimp C, whose real name is Chad Butler, was one half of the Houston rap duo UGK."

The rap beefcake and showbiz socialite are said to have become good friends in recent months, prompting speculation of a collaboration.

Lohan, who has previously released two albums to little fanfare, has already approached Fiddy about the idea, according to her father Michael.

He explained: "They're talking about working together. Nothing's firm yet, but they're in talks. They've actually known each other for a while, just from being in the business together and crossing paths at events."

Congrats to Usher and Tameka! They welcomed a brand new baby boy yesterday in Atlanta.

"Usher and his wife, Tameka Foster, welcomed a baby boy at 9:55 p.m. Monday night, a representative for the singer has confirmed to MTV News. The baby weighed 7 pounds and 9 ounces and has been named Usher Raymond V.

Usher said in a statement released Wednesday (November 28), "We are so happy and proud of our beautiful son. What a blessing!"

Usher was with his wife and new son Tuesday at an Atlanta hospital, and the family is expected to head home on Wednesday, according to People.com."

I know that there's a lot of fingers being pointed at the hip-hip community right now for various reasons. However, I was kind of surprised to hear that a Christian group out of the UK called out gangsta rapper 50 Cent "satanic", and demanded his retirement from rapping.

"London, Nov 8 - The Resistance, a Christian group, is asking rapper 50 Cent to retire because he is 'satanic'.

The group, which doesn't agree with the rapper's lifestyle and his lyrics, wants him to quit because he had said that he would do so himself if Kanye West's album 'Graduation' beat his album 'Curtis' on the album charts, contactmusic.com reports. The group is urging people to send requests to 50 Cent's MySpace.com asking him to quit music.

Mark Dice, group's spokesperson, said: 'It is time for 50 Cent to be a man of his word, and retire. The world will be a better place when this satanic piece of filth retires and stops making music."
